In the air
My philosophy (if you want to call it that) has always been that rumors should be looked at in mass and not just as one voice. This philosophy has served me pretty well over the years. But today I think I may break with my normal way of thinking and and accept this rumor as definitely being onto something. I think this guy may actually have it right. Here is the part of what he said that rang the most true with me:
“I spoke many moons ago about a scenario where you come home, put your iPhone on the table, sit down and voila! Instant update. Instant sync. We’ve started that ball rolling with the cloud and Mobile Me … but we’re not there yet for podcasts and music. With this type of product, we would be. Automatic sync over the air. For music, apps, — EVERYTHING — not just calendars and bookmarks.
Think about it … you don’t think that Mobile Me is just about those little things, do you? Mobile Me is the beginning of a new world of computing. It’s the beginning of the end for software on DVDs. It’s the beginning of life over the air.”
I can’t say for certain that Apple’s next step will be stop selling boxed software. But this article made enough sense to lead me onto the thought process that Apple really does have a master plan that we are being led to with all their devices. You can begin to follow their path to a boxed software free world: portable mp3 players that double as portable hard drives (iPods) and can function (but not sync) with multiple computers; portable devices that can sync with multiple computers (iPhone and MobileMe - at least it will as soon as everything gets to working correctly); and a very portable laptops that only contain a hard drive - basically an iPod touch with a keyboard (MacBook Air). The only reason I have ever touched a CD/DVD for any of these devices has been to archive my CD collection onto my iPod. Everything else has been done without a disc. Overall, I think it is definitely something to think a little more about.
