The iguana flies again
The other night I actually had control of the remote control for the big TV in our house. This of course meant I was able to flip channels and watch commercials to my heart’s content. At least until I stumbled onto a repeat of The Last Starfighter movie. I only missed about the first 10 minutes of it. Since I had already seen it (about a million times) before, I wasn’t worried about it and I watched it. I hadn’t seen this movie in a very long time and strangely enough it is not a movie in my fairly extensive DVD collection. I had forgotten how much I liked that movie. Yeah, the special effects are nothing compared to anything we see today and the acting is nothing to write home about (although many people would disagree with me on that one), but it is still a great movie to watch. I was fairly young when the movie came out in the theaters, but I do remember that I originally saw it there. The best line from the movie has got to be: “I’m about to get killed a million miles from nowhere with a gung-ho iguana who tells me to relax.
And now rumors have surfaced about an actual sequel: The Last Starfighter 2! The Last Starfighter movie ended as almost all sci-fi movies of the 80’s ended - with definite overtones to having a sequel. But nothing ever became of it. No one ever showed up with a director’s chair and a video camera and said let’s make another one - people might like to see what happens to all these characters - it’ll be fun. No, they just went on about their lives and forgot all about it… typical. If they do ever manage to film the sequel for this, I will definitely be there on opening night - I might even spring for the industrial size popcorn and a bladder busting soda.
